The Nairobi national park

…The Nairobi national park, was established in the year 1964. It is a national park in Kenya, and is managed by the Kenya wildlife services. Nairobi national park is the only animal park in the world, that is located in a capital city. It is Located just 7kms from the heart of the city.

In my recent safari drive to the park, when I visited Kenya, I got an experience of a lifetime. The park charges park fees, which varies in amount. They have rates for citizens, both adults and children, and non- resident rates, both for  adults and children. Citizens have to show their i.ds, this is because the citizen rate is very low, this is to make sure no one claims to be a citizen and enjoy citizen rates, while they actually are not.

As soon as you drive past the main gate, you will be able to spot some animals already.

Our safari game driver, who also doubles up as the safari guide, had earlier cautioned us not to be late, this was so that we can be able to see as many animals as possible.

I Later learnt that animals tend to move around in the mornings and in the evenings. When the sun is up and  hot, they prefer to shade under the savannah shrubs. This is why its important to do a game drive early in the morning, or late in the evening.

As you drive through the park, you will notice a magnificent structure that passes right in the middle of  the park: The Nairobi- Mombasa standard gauge railway. This SGR connects Nairobi to Kenya’s coastal city: Mombasa.

The park is home to hundreds of animals, and more so, 4 of the big 5, that places Kenya on the map as a safari tourist destination. Among Kenya’s big 5 animals, these 4 are the ones you will find at the Nairobi national park: Rhinos, lions, buffaloes, and leopards, elephants are not in the  Nairobi park, but can be found in other parks in Kenya.

Other animals found at the park include ostriches, giraffes, zebras, gazelles, kudus, antelopes, hippos, jackals, tortoises, and the Nile crocodiles, which are the largest crocodilians in Africa. The park is also home to a lot of birds, and many other animals.

If you are planning to visit Kenya, or are already in Kenya, spare some time and visit the Nairobi national park, it’s just at the backyard of the city, you shouldn’t have any excuses not to.
